Hi Pip,
I understand how you see this, but, times were difficult, the majority of the Jewish intelligentsia had been removed, leading lights like Zelenka, Schulhoff, and others, exterminated by Nazi occupiers, under Reinhard Heydrich. Lidice, and the massacre of Czech innocents as a reprisal for the military assassination of Heydrich by Czech military personnel flown there from Leamington Spa, was fresh in the memory.
Karel Teige had been in hiding, as the Gestapo wanted to recruit the leading modernist/surrealist to help them execute communists.....
We can have no knowledge, we weren't there to see or experience those times.
Revenge is often described as being sweet, but somehow, I doubt it.
I feel sorry for Podbira, and the Rachmanns.
I feel sorry for the Jews and Roma of Teresin.
War and its aftermath, is usually unable to determine innocent from guilty.
Regards,
Marcus
