Hi.  What year is engraved on the base (is it 1987)? I cannot find a design of that name in the Caithness Guide.

This looks like a Murano weight to me, the raised mound in the base and the way the fish is set between two fonds is typical of the way they make them. Also it doesn't really look up to the Manson quality so I hope I am wrong but has someone got a Murano and scratched a fake inscription on the base ?

I agree - it doesn't look good enough to be Willie's work.
I can't enlarge the pics much, and they're a bit out of focus - but the "Caithness" seems to have an anomalous gap between the C and the rest of the word - that's not really up to Caithness standard either.  ???

On the board we have indeed a strong fraction who intend very quick to say: Murano!
All Murano fishes I know are flat and not 3D.
So I add another picture which shows the engraving:

I don't know - although if Willie was working at Caithness in '69, perhaps he still had a long way to go before he got to be as good as he is now?
But the writing of "caithness" still doesn't look good, and I still don't think it's Willie's work. (I could be wrong, pwts aren't really my thing)

I can't find much about dates - apart from this. (link below). It is possible he was at Caithness in '69.

Hi.

I do not think there were any Caithness lampwork paperweights until 1974, and I do not think Willie Manson made any for them until 1976.  The only Caithness paperweights issued in 1969 were the first Planets set of four.

I am sure this is not a genuine Caithness paperweight.   Regarding Murano fish, I have had some in the past that were 3D and swimming upright, but not as colourful as this one.
