cut glass ??
« on: April 29, 2006, 08:41:56 PM »
Hi folks,
Im not sure what this piece is- its heavy & well worn - i feel early-mid C19th. Is it a short vase? Oversized drinking glass? It looks the wrong shape to me to be either. Ive seen similar examples in books with a cover - described as sweetmeat containers ,confitures  or simply covered jars.
Any ideas?
It is about 19cm high and 9cm across the top.

Ive got loads of decent quality old cut glass to get rid of(Got to clear the loft before builders arrive). I'd like to check it all out before i do- Can anyone suggest good online sites/books that can help me check out decanters, drinking glasses etc. Thanks David

Sorry Pamela - mainly cut glass and other blown glass i think. Lots of it! - I didnt think i had so much. I had to clear a loft and a garage . I now have crates of glass all round the house.

Oh ! Ive just remembered two pieces of pressed glass. I re-found these 2 pieces today. They were identified for me on this site ages ago. Inca pattern . They are clear and green versions of this vase (not carnival colours)        http://www.ddoty.com/incavase.html

Hi David,
...and you want to get rid of them too?
I know that this is not the platform to negotiate - perhaps you may drop me a line to arminewa dot aol dot com - thank you!
BTW cannot trace an INCA or INKA pattern in my copies of catalogues  :(

Inca would be the carnival name for it, not the catalogue name Pamela. Seems that carnival folk have to name everything

Pamela,
Thanks for the message. Ive looked at replacements .com but they mostly seem to deal with fairly recent glass. Mine is generally 70-120 years old i'd guess. Thanks anyway.
I'm not sure about selling the vases-though i probably should. I usually sell at an antiques centre or local auction. I've never sold on net before not even E-bay.  No idea how id pack such huge items safely.

I remember the recent discussion here (on the GMB) about the Inca vase very well (I gave the name and a little bit of background history).

Yes, Inca is the name given to the vase by Carnival collectors. The maker is not yet known but is almost certainly Czech.

You can read about it here (yes it's my website too)
http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/Inca.html

And you can read about a fascinating recent discovery of one of the Inca's "sister" patterns here
http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/GiantLily.html

And here you can see the original query, David, where I identified the vase.
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,1081.0.html

Finally, to confirm "Inca" is not an original pattern name for this vase. And yes, Carnival Glass collectors do name patterns. It's essential. Virtually without exception, none of the Classic USA patterns were named by the manufacturers. It would be impossible to identify or have any form of data base reference without assigning names - and the assignation of pattern names for Carnival patterns has itself been a fascinating and much referenced study over the past 50 years.

Some of the European patterns were named by the makers - but only some. In our books (by "our" I mean Steve and I) we have always been very careful to include all names and "aka"s for every pattern we have written about. Some of the European patterns were given names by collectors long before it was even known they were from Europe. A lot of my research and writing has involved identifying European makers and discovering original names, if they existed. In my writings I include original names, if known. But not every European pattern was named.

We do not know an original name for the Inca vase.

Just wondering if maybe this thread ought to be split into two? "Cut Glass" is rather misleading for the Inca vase information.

Thanks for the info about the cut glass. I wondered about celery but ive several of those, they are generally taller and i think more recent. I still feel this to be much older- but thats just a hunch.
Thanks Glen I recall your help and information well. I visited your website again recently when i re-found the inca vases.
