Hiya everyone, I have this tiny little red glass shell bowl (links below) and I haven't the foggiest who or what it is - if anyone could help I'd be grateful. It's only tiny at 3.5in/9cm length and 2in/5cm tall and has gold flecks/bubbles in the glass (they don't show in the photographs though).

It could be a Murano ashtray. I've got a red one with gold flecks and bubbles in.

Thanks Simone, I had thought it might be Murano but I worry that I'm guilty of attributing almost everything chunky to Murano with nothing particular to go on (despite having been forced to visit one of the Murano glassworks as a child I'm ashamed to admit I know precious little about Murano glass) I think I need to invest in a good book - any suggestions anyone? Incidentally we also visited the glasswork at Biyot in the South of France in the 1970's and the only thing I can remember is the glassblower flirting with my Mum and provocatively blowing the glass whilst giving her the eye LOL (she was wearing hotpants at the time!).

It looks like it could be by Archimede Seguso. Try having a Google for that name and 'shells'. Or Seguso + shells or any combination of those words...erk...I have a hangover from hell and can't think straight.

I have a Seguso clamshell salt but that has a flat ground base see here shell

If it's a salt, then it's a master salt . It's 3/4 inch longer and 1 inch deeper than mine - quite big for a salt.

Ah course it is! Not that I'll be using it as an ashtray (I don't smoke and it's way too pretty to stub cigarettes out in!). Thanks again for your help everyone.

In my experience it's a great time to buy ashtrays. All these ex-smokers are getting rid of them, and have forgotten that they are decorative.

Snuff boxes and foxhunting memorabilia, etc. etc. the best bargains may be UNfashionable!
