Fratelli Toso millefiori miniature vase?
« on: July 07, 2013, 04:16:23 PM »
Hi,

a nice find from this weekend. The question is whether itīs an old one or a new?
Itīs ca. 8.5cm tall.

TIA
Dirk

The style looks like it could be old. It is in an old style. I am not sure, though, since the old style may have been copied. I am in the same boat as you, Dirk.

Thank you, Anita.  :-*
Handling the piece doesnīt really make it easier in this case...  :-\
As you said - colour and style donīt make you exclude old. Nor did the immense grime I cleaned it from.
Anyway - suppose itīs not the worst spent Euro of all times.  ;)

Not bad at all. We'll just say it's old. It reminds me of some of the things made c 1910-20.

That seems the usual procedure with these.

Sheldon Barr, Venetian Glass Confections in Glass 1855-1914 page 117, shows a jug (amongst a variety of "mosaic glass" items) which has very similar cane structures and colours to the "sleeved, daisy centred" cane in Dirk's jug. Page 119 of the book describes the pieces as being 1900-1914.

Similar canes may have been used later, but is there any real evidence of such use in Fratelli Toso work?

Good reference, KevinH. The murrines do look much like Dirk's. I notice that some of them even have the slightly-sideways orientation of the center spin (tangential cut through cane). I am actually fairly convinced that this is a piece from that time. I've seen the same style canes used latter, but I haven't seen the Vittorio Zuffi-style placement of the canes in later pieces. The way the canes are lined up made me first think it was an older piece.

Thank you, both.
It was always the īcane-thingī which kept me from buying paperweights and similar.
Itīs such a science for itself and I was afraid it could occupy me as much as glass in
general. So thanks again I donīt have to dig deeper into that matter myself.  ;)  ;D

Those daisies BTW look very similar to the ones used on this piece:

They do. It looks like your pieces are from the same era. Yikes at that opening bid on the eBay piece! I have been seriously undercharging for mine. I thought maybe it was a larger vase, but it is a miniature. Is there anything special about it?
