Unusual? Vasart canes
« on: July 26, 2013, 01:46:58 PM »
Got a few Vasart weights recently and two have canes that I've not seen before and cannot find any other examples on Richard More's site or in my books.
The canes are the square canes with an 8 in as below. This weight is 65mm diameter/ 2.5" with a fire polished base the other is larger at 75mm 3" on a white ground with the same 8 canes.
Has anyone seen these before are they unusual? Are they early/late?

Nick

Hi Nick.

I think I have seen similar canes in the past in Vasart weights, but I have no idea what period they come from, I'm sorry to say.  But Vasart (and Ysart more generally) sometimes used canes that were made many years before the paperweight was put together.

Thanks Alan, I still can't find any other examples with these canes I rather like them, the other weight is a nicer weight but only has the one version of the 8 cane.

I might just be seeing "faces in clouds" ...

... but the centre section of the centre cane looks like JA to me!! The look of the orange part of that cane does seem to be like that of the vitreolite colour used for a time at Vasart Ltd - and is also used in a more regular version of a JA cane.

Any chance of a couple of pics in macro mode of that centre cane?

I'll try and take some more today or tomorrow Kevin, I had been trying to work out if the centre cane was anything other than just folds in the glass too.

I've not heard of the JA cane either do the initials stand for anything or is it just a cane that coincidentally looks like JA like the Walsh Walsh 7 & 6 cane?

I sold one years ago with a J.A cane learned afterwards it was a 'rare' Jack Allen paperweight.

Thanks Chris I hadn't made that connection, just taken some close up photos but unless its very distorted I can't see a JA, will upload them shortly.

Kevin as requested closeups of central cane, unless it's very distorted I cannot see a JA there?

Thanks for the good close up images. Agreed ... it's not a JA signature cane.

Yes shame though, have you seen the square 8 canes often Kevin?
