Earlyish mdina globe for viewing???
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:50:37 AM »
:) Very chuffed bought at a local antiques fair today i must admit im preety sure its an early harris era piece as seems to have the right sort of thing's goin on with the rim and colouring, Unusual as it has a gloopy colour trail around much of it which in strong natural light has orange red and dark blue in it??Un marked to base. 5.5-6" diameter. Thought id see what the mdina collectors thought of it think??

I think you are 100% correct.  ;D

I would think the strange colours that appear in sunlight might be something to do with the refraction of the light.

If you look at a piece which has the frothy yellow background with blue trails on it (as in the design with the three spirals on it), with the light coming through it, it will show all sorts of muddy purples and browns. But there is only yellow and blue glass there.

When light comes through coloured glass, it will reflect the colour on the other side - only allowing the wavelengths which are not reflected to come through the glass, so those are what you see.

Colour in glass does not work like paint.  :)

Do we suspect a touch of cobalt?

ok. Let's not get into that can of worms right now. ;)
Bradbury (I want to call you Ray ;) ) are you going to be at the National in November? If you are, can you bring it with you to show us?
