Monart? Vase shape unknown?
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:10:11 PM »
I purchased this vase recently and I recognise the colourway (mottled pink at bottom to purple at the top) as possibly coming from Monart, judging from the base - the pontil is ground, but is slightly concave.

However, although I've looked through Frank's site (www.ysartglass.com) I cannot identify the shape. The nearest appears to be either Shape A or JF, but the shape is not quite right and neither are the sizes given. I don't think it's Vasart or Strathearn, and there doesn't appear to be a signature.

The height of this one is 6½in (16.5cm).

Any thoughts from the experts?

Hi David it is Monart shape A and most likely a pre 1939 piece.

Oh great, thanks Gary. The size threw me a little as Frank's site gives 6in and 7in heights, but being handmade can make quite a difference.

Not bad for £3 then?  ;)

Some extra info on your Monart vase, the colour code is 181. The size code is possibly V111+. In the Monart catalogue it shows shape A standing 6 inches tall is size code V111 and one standing 7 inches tall being size code V11, with your one standing 6 1/2 inches tall which is in between these sizes it follows the size code for yours is V111+.
You replied whilst replying, that is a fantastic price.

Thanks for the extra data - nice to clear up the size issue.

The price? I did only pay that, but there is a crack in the base, another at the rim, and a dink in the side (sorry for teasing!)  :) "Much loved" is how teddy bear enthusiasts call their knackered bears, but as a display piece it's fine, and it's not easy to see the damage: looks nice on the mantlepiece!
