Antique French ? Cherub Sulphide Paperweight
« on: September 29, 2013, 03:37:07 PM »
Help to Id this cherub sulphide paperweight please.

I am thinking French Baccarat or St Louis mid 19th century.

The paperweight weighs 850gm and measures 5"x 3.5" / 12cm x 9cm

Height  1.5" or 4cm.

Thanks Roy

Hi Roy.  I would not rule out Apsley Pellat as an option - his sulphides are rather silvery and very high quality, which this appears to be. That could mean early 19th century.

Thanks Alan

Had never heard of Apsley Pellat until I googled sulphide paperweights and I noticed a few but nothing quite the same.
The only reason I was thinking French was because of the style and shape of the glass rather than the sulphide.
The sulphide seems to have some discolouration which may be oxidation I think.

Thanks again for your help.

Roy

Looks like a Gillinder pressed weight into which plaster has been poored from the rear.
