Bought at auction at Ausglass Conference earlier this year
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:00:27 AM »
This 77cm long object is a very accurate representation of an Aboriginal fish trap (slightly different from their eel trap).  It was made by Jennie Kewarre Martiniello who has an aboriginal heritage despite the Italian name.  She told me that a very slightly larger one took 7 (that is seven) assistants to put together.  I am fairly certain that much of the fine 'mesh' would have been supervised by Tow Rowney who does exquisite latticino(or whatever you choose to call it).  The piece was made at the Canberra Glassworks.

I am thrilled to have won it, and when I checked the cost at Canberra Glassworks a much smaller one c. 25cms cost as much as I paid.

Well done, what a great acquisition (and a bargain to boot, it would seem). I would have loved to go to Ausglass, must do it one year.

All courtesy of a good win on the stock market.  I shall be putting up some more bits over the next week or so.  Australian Art glass is alive and doing well despite there not being enough collectors with the passion for it.

Yes, Stuart pencil in about 18 months time or so and it will be on again in Adelaide.  Magnificent place to visit if you love wine - Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, MacLaren Vale, Langhorne creek and the Fleurieu Peninsular.  Did I mention the Mt Lofty Ranges.  Is there a NZ equivalent - if so when is the next I might be able to come across.  I would love to see your collection If I could.  I already have 11 NZ artists in my small collection.  Nearer 200 Aussies though - some very mundane others quite marvellous.  Lots of early works.

NZSAG (Glass artists) holds a biennial conference that is like Ausglass, though probably a bit smaller. See http://www.nzsag.co.nz/. 2012 was a great event in Whanganui, planning is underway for 2014, but I don't know any details yet. I have been to Adelaide once before, but I'd love to do it again for glass. If you are in NZ I'd be happy to show you my collection
