Crystal Paperweight Pair - - Swedish? ID = Orrefors (modern)
« on: November 09, 2013, 06:55:49 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone recognize these pieces? Or have a guess as to origin?

One is smooth round, the other facetted. I don't know if they were meant as a pair, I bought them together, years ago.

The bottoms are perfectly smooth.

They are both 3 1/8" (7.9cm) wide x 2 3/4" (7cm) high, and weigh in at 2 pounds (.9kg).

I'm assuming they are lead crystal, because a glass paperweight of the same dimensions weighs 1 3/4 pounds (.79kg), 1/4 pound difference.

I'm guessing that they're Swedish, I don't tend to think of either Murano, or Chinese origin for crystal versus glass.

Don't know who made them, but I like them.  Is the upper part of each clear with a sort of caramel brown base?  The coloured background makes it impossible for me to determine,so the best background is plain white.   I also find a clear shot of the base is a help in determining who is unlikely to be a maker.   Finally the practice on this board is to post them separately so that any discussion has no chance of becoming confused.  By the way, the photos themselves are excellent.

Orrefors Art Glass Bullicante Gold Mid Century Modern Paperweight, third picture down. I own that one personally as well.

1970s Orrefors art glass paperweight designed by Olle Alberius.

Quintessentially 1970s style to this weight that has a dome of bullicante bubbles in the center, surrounded by the 6 exterior concave cut windows that add a great dimensional quality to the piece by multiplying the band of metallic gold accent around the low edge. Very disco!

I assume the others are Orrefors as well......

Thanks both very much.

Ross, the bottoms on both are a bright shiny gold, and any color you see is the reflected color from the bottom, a lovely effect/design.

It's almost as if the bottom of the w8 was dipped in liquid gold, roughly 1/2 inch, but the interior is crystal clear.

Tan, if Orrefors made the faceted one, then the other is also Orrefors as well, they are almost identical other than the cut view windows.

Again thank you both for the invaluable information.

I would be very surprised if they Orrefors as most of there stuff, particularly of Olle Alberius's era would be engraved with something - even if it was a simple 'Of'.  Perhaps you have pictures or references to confirm your assertion Tan.

Thanks Tan.  That means they are still being made as that is a very modern sticker.  By the way would you be willing to post the photo of the sticker in the appropriate part of yobunny so it is recorded.
