Pebble shaped clear weight? with Whitehouse eagle mark
« on: January 09, 2014, 02:29:06 PM »
Any opinions on this one? Is it a memento from the Whitehouse shop (I'm not even sure if they have one!) or is this a more widely used mark? It seems quite well made.

Working on getting the pics uploaded but here is a link for now.

It is definitely not a White House souvenir, at least not an official one.  The emblem on the bottom of this blob of glass is not the White House seal which is a line drawing of the White House itself, nor the Presidential or Vice Presidential seals which have much more to them than just an eagle like this.

There are actually two recognized White House gift shops though neither gets any taxpayer money at all to operate.  Both are operated by private organizations.  One is a non-profit organization called the National Center for White House History which is located in the Decatur House about a block away from the White House, and the second is called the White House Gift Shop which is also run by a non-profit.  They deal mostly on-line, but they also have a shop that is about 2 blocks from the White House.   Here is a link to the White House Gift Shop website - they are much larger than the other one and this one has glassware.  http://www.whitehousegiftshop.com  Mostly it is inexpensive tourist stuff that looks like it was made in China.   And here is a link to the National Center for House History website though I don're recall seeing any glassware at this one:   http://shop.whitehousehistory.org

There are also small souvenir vender carts and wagons all over the place in downtown Washington hawking all kinds of ultra cheap junk to the tourists along with hot dogs and soft pretzels and the like.  Their junk is typically Chinese stuff that is made to be sold for a couple of dollars and they do not pay too much attention to things like what an actual emblem or official seal really looks like.  It could be something like this?
