Large 'Lion of Venice' glass paperweight ~ Murano?
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:26:36 PM »
Hi guys,
This large paperweight features what I believe is the 'Lion of Venice' and I'm hoping someone out there may be able to give me some information about it before I list it on eBay. It's about 4" (10cm) in diameter and 2 1/2" tall. The white lion is painted(?) on a cobalt blue cushion, there's a ring of millefiori canes around the outside near the bottom and the base is polished flat and has some signs of age. Given the subject matter, I'm guessing that it's a Murano weight, but would really appreciate any information you could let me have (e.g. is the lion painted or applied in some other way, is there a name for this type of weight and would I be correct in describing it as a magnum?).
As always, many thanks in anticipation!
Cheers, John.

Well - it's the "Mark the Evangelist Lion" - not confined to Venice, although the possibly most famous example "lives" there.

I would say the weight is Murano, nevertheless, and the image is transfer printed.
