Is this the 1st paperweight ever made....? Looks Very Old...
« on: February 07, 2014, 03:18:11 AM »
Hi. I came across this paperweight, and was really drawn to it for some reason. It seemed really, really old to me. There's a heavy pontil scar on the bottom, some swirled iridescence stripes, and it's not perfectly round. It's very pretty, and just looked really old. Can anyone here help me identify it in some way? Maybe an age, or a maker? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi.

It is not easy (well, near impossible) to identify the makers of the generic 'swirls and bubbles' paperweights, as so many makers and small studios around the world have produced pieces with such designs.  The style of yours looks 20th century to me.

I doubt that the weight is more than 50 years old if it has iridescent glass stripes that appear to change colour with viewing angle.  If it has aventurine stripes (ie fine copper/gold coloured specks) then it could be older.  I cannot tell which yours might have from the images, I'm afraid.

Sorry I cannot be more precise.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. I think that's what they are. Here's another pic I just took up close. They appear to be copper, gold and silver. Here's a link to a closer pic that was too large for the attachment section, as well as one I could add. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r84/onegroovydude/Glass%20Cane%20Paperweight/For%20Forum/DSC04883Pixels.jpg
