Are you absolutely sure this isn't two pieces which have been forced into a "marriage"?
They don't seem to match in any way.  ???

But I suppose it could be a caviare sort of thingy - ice in the bottom, and the nasty little fishy black salty balls go in the flowepot bit.  ;)

if they are a marriage Keith, could it have been the base of an oil lamp?  or should it have had a little decorative metal lid to sit inside the metal collar maybe?
Is the white insert cased in clear glass btw?
Lovely piece!

Did wonder about a 'marriage' the small bowl fits snug in the metal grill which also fits well onto the bowl,I thought maybe a single flower head in the small one surrounded by other flowers  ??? as for it being cased I'll look in the morning, really like the feet on this, ;D ;D

I've "served my time" in the back rooms of Oxfam sorting, cleaning and pricing the bric-a-brac.

It is amazing how easy it is to "marry" all sorts of odd things, how easily some completely unrelated things fit others. I really wouldn't read anyting into the "fit" of the two bits.

They do both seem to have a pearlescent surface treatment.  Do they actually match, in terms of the pearlescence?

The colours are closer than in the photo but the little pot is 'mop' and the bowl martele, the original little pot was probably also martele pattern,I presume. The pearlescence is the same and in answer to M's question, yes there is a clear casing to the insert. ;D ;D
