Topic: Albert Nicklin 1847 - 1905

My Great Grandfather was Albert Nicklin. He was born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire in 1847. He worked as a glass engraver in one of the many glass factories in Stourbridge. By 1891 until his death in 1905 he worked and lived in Edinburgh as a glass engraver/decorator. In 1891 he was a lodger at 16 Montrose Terrace and in 1901 he was living with his wife Emily at 13 Wolseley Crescent in Edinburgh. Is there any source of material that will help me find out where he worked and the type of work he was doing plus anything else that may be relevant?

Not really. Perhaps there are some documents in the family? Always keen to know of any that worked in Scotland. Will keep my eyes peeled for the name.

Edinburgh & Leith would be the most likely candidate?

Yes lived close-by. But no records of staff exist.

The Museum of Edinburgh has a number of examples of local glass manufacturing and engraving, and may have records of your great grandfather. The museum is located at Huntly House, 142 Canongate, on the Royal Mile. It's not well-known, but is a good resource for local companies and employees.

It is a nice old place to wander round - creaky floorboards, winding staircases, the lot. A very nice glass gallery as well, but whether they have detailed employment records is anyone's guess. There's also the National Museum of Scotland just around the corner that might also be worth trying.
