Edwardian oil bottle?
« on: April 18, 2014, 02:01:04 PM »
Hi all, anyone have an idea on the date of this sweet little oil bottle,it has a polished pontil with 44 on it but no stopper with very little wear in the neck and floral engraving, there is wear to the feet with a high pitched ping when flicked, many thanks.

I like that, looks a bit 'Stourbridge' but with that mark I'd go with Bohemian, a good maker in my opinion, ;D ;D

Keith may well be correct - those figures look possibly Continental - and although you don't give the height, it's possible it might be a small jug of sorts rather than a liquid condiment bottle.            Condiments are often thinner in shape rather than bulbous like this, but maybe on the Continent things were different.

In the U.K. in the late 1860's 1870 there seems to have been a flourish of Registrations for designs of shell ribbed handles/feet etc. (see Gulliver), and quite possibly this occurred on mainland Europe as well.  Bearing in mind the wheel decoration I'd suggest a date of 1870 - 1890, but don't imagine you'll find a maker. :)

The numbers certainly remind me of French writing style.
