Help ID Signature. ID = Judy Harris, Australia
« on: May 12, 2014, 02:23:13 AM »
This is a small round glass piece, rather plain in a shade of red with a few random dark spots. The base is signed but I am unfamiliar with the signature. Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you Chris.

Chris, I can't make out the sig but I do suspect it should be read the other way up, as the bit on the left looks like 80 (i.e. a date year 1980?) when rotated through 180 degrees...

Hi, could it be Jonathan Harris?

Definitely not. He writes his name in full and very small and legibly. I have six of his paperweights but no sig photo though

Hi Christine, OK, I don't have any of his pieces anymore but you must admit it does look like "J Harris & Q".

This piece is signed "J Harris 80" by artist Judy Harris in the year 1980. Other examples of her work and signature, in items co-made with Peter Minson and Chris Pantano, have featured in another recent GMB thread. Some biographical details about Judy Harris and another example of her signature may be found there:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,59028.msg335317.html#msg335317

The date of 1980 indicates this is an early piece in her (short) career in blown glass. It would have been made at the Paris Creek craft workshops in South Australia, under the tutelage of Peter Minson.
