TINY ETCHED FLOWER VASE
« on: June 05, 2014, 05:10:28 PM »
Hi all,i can't make this little 9cm oval vase out,it looks old but has no wear to the base,no shear mark or polished pontil, just a 1.5cm circle, the top is flat with a slight bevel so maybe a bohemian piece.I hope you can see the etching that to me looks like ferns growing out of a couple of toilets ???,i think it maybe soda glass, but not sure, any thoughts many thanks .

I can't help, but I'm laughing so hard, they ARE growing out of toilets!

Thank you for the laugh!

It's engraved not etched and I think it's a glass not a vase and English. Perhaps late 1830s onward when pteridomania kicked off

Ahh,i did mean to say engraved, promise, well that certainly pre dates the close coupled toilet!,i have to admit the glass bit surprises me as i haven't seen one like it before with a very narrow opening at the top and such a flat rim, nice surprise though ,thanks. What sort of drink would this glass have been made for?

As long as that's all!! It's probably for violets; you see violet vases in lots of the catalogues

Circle is just the remains of the glass blob used to stick it to the punty iron. Just not polished off.

There is an scholarly article of fern vases on-line somewhere, search with Scotland/Scottish as one of the words. Not saying it is Scottish though.
