Topic: Hyacinth vase date help please.

Hello there, can anyone give me a rough date for these please, they are hand blown with lots of inclusion and bubbles within the glass and have the look of Georgian glass , wear on the bases and rough pontils, i'm thinking at a rough guess 1850's


One is amethyst and the other Bristol green ?.

7 1/2 inches in height, 3 inches across the base and 2 1/2 inches across the rim, the green one has a pinched in base.

Dear Chris,

I'm replying on Christine's computer as I'm spending a the weekend with her.
Your two vases are old, they can be anything between 1820 and 1840. By 1850 they started to have very fancy and much more stable hyacinth vases which your churns are neither. They might not be rare as such but vases of circa 200 years old, and being household glass to boot, to survive as they did is rare enough in my opinion. The colour green and amethyst (or blue) are not by chance either. People in those days thought hyacinth bulbs would grow better in very dark glass, simulating soil, daylight was kept out as much as possible. After 1850 they knew that that was nonsense.
