Another Uranium Monart
« on: September 02, 2014, 03:56:43 PM »
One of my latest - shape OF size VII - 6.75 inches high.

Haven't managed to photograph under UV yet to show the uranium content - I think the glass itself  (very yellow) contains uranium and also has it in one of the green enamels.

It has the same "coppery" sparkle (lots of tiny bubbles) as my FA shape uranium one and the cylinder in Perth museum.
It also has the "veining" pattern, 2 shades of green and a pinky red colour as big "splodges". Lots of bubbles of all sizes, thick heavy glass and a few annealing cracks.

Have you got one in a similar colour Gary or is yours not as yellow and with orange splodges?
I'm sure I've seen another one in this colourway somewhere ?

I personally think this is an earlier piece, but have no evidence of this!  :D

Is that the one that was on ebay, described as possibly Monart.
I believe it is a pre war piece and a nice example of that type of decoration.
I have a bowl with that type of decoration with yellow and orange splashes and a vase with blue and purple splashes.

That does look as if it is going to glow like billy-o!

How many spies have you got out there, seeking Uranium Monart?  ;D

Honestly - you have so much of it!

My brother and his partner who collected for years don't have anywhere nearly as many pieces of uranium Monart as you do!
They weren't looking out for it in particular - only got a surprise one when a UV light was turned on their collection and they found a few.

Hi,
Yes Gary it is that one! Well spotted!
Coincidentally I had to go over that way anyway and got a reasonable amount of the price!

It's a grand total of 4 pieces with uranium, but one of those only has it a bit of it in the green enamels splodges!

I do love this sort of Monart  ;D ;D (but my O.H. is still worried about the uranium - says he's getting a Geiger counter  ;) )

Geiger counters are only about 10% efficient. It takes a LOT of radioactivity to make one tick.
A UV torch will suffice. :)

The kind emitted by the uranium in glass can be stopped by a sheet of paper - no need for full lead armour!
Also, the radioactive material stays in the glass.
It's only dangerous if you inhale glass dust from it.

I keep telling him it's safely sealed inside the glass !

I must remember now though not to break any  ;D ;D

Even if you do, it is easy to find every single last tiny sliver. Turn out the lights, get your uv torch on.
A damp bar of soap can be used to pick bits up, saves you risking your fingers.

No, not as much as it looks like it should do  ??? - it just turns green! but I only have a small UV torch so maybe I'll get a bigger one and try with that!
