My mention of a "commercial" chalcedony was my repeating of something Adam Aaronson posted not too long ago.
I assume, possibly wrongly, that the non-bought-in-block stuff was created by the glassmaker from different colours of glass as well as (sometimes) the inclusion of silver salts.
I got the impression that the commercial bought in block stuff just "created" the chalcedony effect as it was worked.
Maybe we need Adam to clarify?

Lovely isn't it and the variation produced is impressive, I found mine hard to photograph.

I vaguely recall that when the method for making chalcedony glass was re-discovered on Murano (1850-1860ish) it was difficult to get reliable results with. In an entirely unscientific way (specifically - I have not seen any) I don't think much chalcedony was then used until the second half of the 20th century and I wonder how much of that would have been bought in.

Michael Hengler explains how he achieves results for producing chalcedony glass here:

Fascinating, with so many variables it must be really difficult to get consistent results. Interesting to see that he buys it in: "The color, upon purchase, usually looks...".

But what he buys in is frit that he then applies to a base glass. I assume the older chalcedony was an effect throughout rather than a surface treatment

Throughout I believe but that also looks to be the case with the nude.

A couple of photos to show this on the urn, the underside of the foot and a close up of a chip on the lid (almost looks a bit like wood grain).

Depends how she's constructed. If each bit is rolled in frit separately, you wouldn't be able to tell. It's extremely hard to tell when glass is surface coloured or coloured throughout unless you have an obliging ground edge or chip. I would also imagine that chalcedony frit is expensive, never mind a whole pot full of chalcedony metal (with consequent waste) however small the pot.

Only if you knew that Loredano Rosin was from Murano
