Max - thanks for your thoughts.    At work as usual, so can't look at the book - but from memory of when I looked at Mark Hill and Eve Thrower's book, believe there is only the one size in this stick  - (Christine will probably come and tell me I'm wrong again). :) -  presumably you don't presently have this book.?    I think your suggestion of the 'Small Size' meaning is very logical - although not necessarily accurate of course.     I know absolutely nothing of current Wedgwood china production.

Paul — Thanks for prompting me to look again.   I had forgotten that there is Wedgwood advertising reproduced in Thrower & Hill, albeit so poorly that the text is almost impossible to read.   It is a 1982 Wedgwood Crystal poster.   Cleo is there, and with text under thus (italic blue for a guess):-

Cleo

Candlestick FJT62
height 135mm, M

At the bottom "M" is translated:-

M — Midnight Grey

So, only one size in 1982.

Interesting that Wedgwood marketing scrapped imperial measures and used words that would need translating in mid-Atlantic.

And my reference in an earlier reply was to different colour Wedgwood labels used for seconds.

ps — Paul, please would you confirm or correct my guesses above.

Frank - thanks for the info.   For anyone interested, Frank's comment re the book refers to page 100 - although in my copy that particular bit is so indistinct that even with a lens I can't see all of the words legibly - but believe that the full interpretation must be correct since it agrees in full with the data on page 69 (where the colour is called simply 'Midnight').  In my ignorance I had thought this darkish thingy was always just 'Midnight'.     Unless I've missed something, believe this particular stick (it's not till you look that you realize there were so many different sticks) was only ever made in this size.   Looking again at my original box (on the bottom :)) it says 'FJT62 Cleo Candlestick - with Candle) hence the height of the box. :-[ - although I don't know how long the original candle may have been.
Re the posters - and I notice that beginning with 1971 there are metric equivalents creeping in (in brackets), and by 1978 the marketing had changed to metric measurement and volume completely (how wet do you get with 17cl - doesn't sound much of a drink to me).         But if you have never looked at the posters, you're in for a treat - the advertising writers were obviously all comedians...........an example for a decanter...."my old man said follow the vin" ... for a small stoppered cruet .........'oil be seeing you'.......for the obvious......'Avocado pair'.......and a decanter........'coming to the aid of the party'.
There is of course the other book on Dartington production  -  I don't know if that includes any further info. on the FJT 62 stick?
None of which really clinches the s/s, so think we will go with Bernard's 'sub-standard' - so as a reject piece guess I will just throw my stick away.
Sorry Emmi - I know it's long again  -  just can't keep them short ::)

I believe Frank himself came up with the blurb. The other book adds nothing about the FJT62.

Susan Tobin: Wedgwood Glass, Page 76.

".....on the base of items designed by Frank Thrower.....(some of these items bore not only the word 'Wedgwood' but also an alphanumerical inspector's code A/1, B/1, C/1, D/1 below the Company name)...."

So I think you have inspector S/5.

Martyn - thanks and very well spotted - and I think we should now give some credit also to 'antiquerose' for suggesting that direction in the beginning.   'The second mark looks more like a *5* to me, than a *S*'.
I am remiss for not even following it up - especially as I do have Susan Tobin's book.   Certainly looks as though you have solved that mystery. :)    Paul S.

...   So I think you have inspector S/5.

Impeccable reasoning, Martyn, but no-one is ever going to use an inspector code that would be interpreted as SubStandard.
