Acid etched bird beaker/tumbler help please.
« on: October 13, 2014, 02:11:55 PM »
I know it's a long shot but has anybody seen any of these before?. There very blue in colour with polished bases and they do not sound like English lead glass when flicked, i'm guessing Victorian 1880's ish.

11cm in height and 7cm across the rim. regards Chris, most of the glass is decorated.

Strong possibility these are U.S. Below is a URL for the bird etches we have documented (althouth there are more) in the U.S. & most are the deep plate etches.  In the search box in the upper right corner simply type in the following: bird and etch

Yes i can see where your coming from, another whole world of glass i did not know existed, ive got three of these and i think i can see a pattern break on one but there all slightly different, almost hand done not machine.

I hope you can see from these pics what i'm on about.

Well in a way it is hand done as the pattern is affixed to the glass by hand before etching & any time there is a break created by the pattern having a minute tear caused by even slightl misapplication you are going to have a pattern break...not uncommon at all.
