Engraved Bohemian box?
« on: October 18, 2014, 04:37:23 PM »
Hi all, i bought this little box for in between £10 and £20 from a smart antique shop,it has a few air bubbles and white bits encased in the glass and extreme wear to the very outer edge like you would expect to feel on a folded foot, the engraving is deep and detailed on some parts mainly the three animals,to me the engraver must have spent some time on it.I have found pieces like this on the net described as 19 century so i can only guess they are very common or this is a later copy, any thoughts many thanks.

Bohemian powder box in amber flash, a technique dating from the early 19th century and not much in use as the same technique in ruby which was introduced a few years later was more popular. I'd go with "19th century" as it is extremely difficult to date these more precisely.
