Mdina / 05 / 73-41A. - BLACK ROCK VASE.
« on: December 19, 2014, 02:40:31 AM »
What I liked about this Vinnies find was the colour and the shape. The black is different for Mdina I think. The swirls almost take over the vase completely and have within them that Mdina metallic creamy/yellow inclusion.

The bluish tones come from reflections - apologies.

The marks on Mdina are a bit of a mystery to me at least. Can anyone help with explaing the significance of the numbers beneath? Is it as late as 2005?

I'd been looking through a favourite site on Danish glass and saw a vase of similar shape to this one by Per Lutken: http://www.hardernet.dk/. It was a unique vase described as "Lerform krukke, multifarvet, tęt marmor lerform opdrevet. 26,0 cm. 24,0 cm. Holmegaard PL 2366. Oktober/november, 1970".

The form is very similar and the decor too! My vase is much smaller.
It is marked beneath with Mdina / 05 / 73-41A.
H:14cm (5 .5") W:10cm x 8 cm (3 .5" x 3 .1")

The numbers are mostly a mystery to us but that is definitely an 05 for 2005

That looks like a contemporary take on a slightly older design they had, (or perhaps it's a design that is still going). The shape is certainly newer than the design.
This design has been seen with paper labels, quite often two paper labels, one with a handwritten set of numbers, but nobody knows what the numbers mean.

Earlier pieces in this design have much smaller deep purple splodges to create the black background. The silver salts are often "painted on" in a straightish line around the middle, with big loopy bits.
It's one I like, I have a few pieces, but in earlier shapes.
This is not a Michael Harris design, sadly, I don't know whose it is.
