Davidson 6283 or 8283.....?
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:54:54 PM »
I just found and bought a ring holder in amber cloud glass. I have this model  too in blue, pink, amber and "black" ( in fact it's deep deep purple) glass.  The dressing table sets 6283 and 8283 of Davidson are very simular but I  never saw a ring holder with those sets, just a kind of tray without the pin. Any idea wether those ring holders are Davidson at all...???

Oh Eugénie, how interesting! I have seen these in colours but never in cloud before.

It does look like a 283 pattern piece, doesn't it, but as far as I can see, there was no 283 ringholder made, so I am at a loss!  I wonder if Chris Stewart of the Davidson / Cloud Glass site can help us? Perhaps it was a special order for one retail customer... ?

What diameter are they please? It would be useful to compare with the size of the 283 pintray which is 3" diameter (76mm).

Chris has, on his website, a number of unknown cloud glass makers,  one of which made a candlestick very similar to (but a slightly different size) the Davidson 283 one...  I wonder if that might be a clue? http://cloudglass.com/ndcat.htm

The size is 76 mm indeed.  By the way, the exterior of the cloud glass one has a satin finish. Polished inside. The others are all polished, both sides.

Hmmm that does really sound very like Davidson, doesn't it?

So, I've been back through all my old images and reference stuff and have found a Davidson set shown with a ring holder... it's the only one I've seen with the other pieces, but it does make me think they are right.  The image is from Wendy Duncan's former website, decoglasssouthwest.com, which vanished in c. 2011 (does anyone know if Wendy is still around? I know she was in and out of hospital a few years ago, and there's been no activity on her eBay account since 2010 either. )

I just found back our conversation of december 2014 about Davidson ring holders. Anne, shouldn't the photos be put on GTS  DAVIDSON 8283. Can you use this one or should I send you a new one? Or.... isn't it sure yet it's Davidson...? Although.... at www.cloudglass.com  I found at DAVIDSON  pattern no 283/4 an interesting remark that says that in a certain period there were ring stand, in Cloud and plain colours.

Thnaks for the nudge Eugénie, I am slowly managing to get the images uploaded... I have just saved the images from here and will add them now. :)

I am sure they are Davidson but the black one is puzzling me, as I've not seen any Davidson trinket set pieces in black before...   although we have had a Sowerby butterfly pot in black on here, so anything is possible, of course! Does the black one have the same ray base pattern as the others?

Yes, indeed, it has!! Absolutely identical to the others, from the ray base pattern to the top of the "pin". I red  again at that wonderfull website:  Cloudglass.com/ George Davidson & Co/Davidson Glass between the Wars/ that Davidson  used black glass  too (although they don't mention trinket sets.... ).

In my collection of  1025 different glass and cristal ring holders I only have  3 black ones... so they seem to be rare anyway.

Today  I found, at my surprise, in a small Dutch village a blue cloud glass Davidson ring holder.
Since  my last posting about Davidson ring holders, I found 3 others too. Herewith 2 photos to add at that subject of  the GTS. Feel free to use them Anne.
