Hi Tony,

Blue book gives International Bottle Co. Ltd., 14 April 1927.   So it does look like a mainland European production.

Hi Bernard,

We have not been part of mainland Europe for tens of thousand years. IBC is an english company.

Hi Bernard & Chris
I may have given you the wrong number, could you have a look at 726384.
When my wife and I were out looking for stuff, I saw two pieces with Reg No, one was a vase, the pattern is a bit like Balmoral, the other was a bottle/decanter, so that would fit the Reg No728791, as I do not think the IBC made vase's

Hi Tony and Chris,

Oops, got that wrong, didn't I?  Thanks Chris for the correction.   In mitigation I have just spent a most enjoyable 24 hours in the company of my great great niece, Amy, aged just 4 2/3.   Rather more important than anything to do with glass.

726384 is not in the blue book.

A few comments from me.

First, Balmoral aka Heavy Vine, has the Reg Number 737581. I am fairly confident that it was registered by the National Glass Company (London). However, the glassware was produced in Czechoslovakia (very possibly by Rindskopf).

It's my understanding that designs were often registered by companies in the UK on behalf of other European manufacturers. I know that IBC (among others) acted for Czech companies.

Hi Glen
Thank you for your few comments, it is a surprise to find out IBC took out Reg for glass.  I have emailed them about there Reg, as I have some of there bottles and jars, I was told there records where in storage and someone would get back to me, I am still waiting!!
Do you have any other info on the glass the took out Reg for?

Tony - no, I don't have any other info about the glass that the International Bottle Company registered the designs for. I'll explain the background........

Some years back (maybe 5 or 6) when I was researching for our second book (mainly on European Carnival) I found a clear glass vase that had a RD number registered by the IBC. Everything about the vase (shape, design etc) shrieked Czech at me. It was much like the Balmoral pattern in many ways too. So, I telephoned IBC and was put through to a gentleman who (fortunately) was in the office that day. From memory, I recall that he had links back to the 1930s and knew what the company had been doing back then. He told me that the company had had business connections with other European manufacturers (and he specifically mentioned Czechoslovakia) and that IBC had acted as agent registering some designs.

As all this was simply based on an unrecorded phone call, I have never used it in anything that Steve and I have had published. But I added it in the thread here to help throw some (informal) light on the situation.

Now why do you find it a surprise that IBC did that? From what I can gather, it was not uncommon for some companies to act on behalf of others in registering designs.

Hi Glen
Thank you for your reply, I am surprised about IBC. as I took them for a manufacture of bottles and jars for the cosmetic trade.
After Reg this vase and maybe others, would they have imported them into the UK, themseles, or would a third party have done this.
By some chance would you have a photo of the vase you found?

Tony, yes they were a manufacturer of bottles - but they obviously had connections in the trade with other makers - and I guess they simply offered a service to register designs (as an agent) on the behalf of another manufacturer. I can't confirm whether they played any further part beyond that. I don't know if they wholesaled other glass or not - no idea. I'm just relating what the chap at IBC told me.

Yes I do have a photo of the vase - I'll post it when I get a moment hopefully later today. Actually I've been searching for the darned vase itself ever since I first saw what you'd written on this thread. But I can't find it (it's in a box somewhere... ) I don't think it is the same as the one you mentioned, because I know I actually managed to look up the RD and it had been registered by IBC - so it is a listed number.

Hope this helps a bit...I'm writing it in a rush, as I am about to leave the building
