Unusual Whitefriars Signature Cane
« on: January 04, 2015, 02:35:32 PM »
I recently acquired this Whitefriars paperweight which, as can be seen, has an unusual signature cane of just a white monk whereas the standard Whitefriars signature cane is a monk with the date (year). Although I have been collecting paperweights for over 25 years I had only ever seen two with this monk signature cane so when the third one appeared I bid and was successful.

It would be interesting to know when and why this cane was used so I spoke to other collectors and some had not even seen it but it was thought possible it may have been used on a trial basis as a forerunner to the monk/date cane but I thought it worth posting a picture so that all can see it. Does anyone have any more information about this cane please ?

Dave
