Possible Mdina Paperweight but Signed ARC
« on: February 05, 2015, 12:29:17 PM »
Hi

I picked up this paperweight a while ago and from the research I have been doing online the nearest design I can find are Mdina ones in several shapes. The ones online all have the normal Mdina on the bottom.

Mine as you can see in the photo is not marked Mdina but ARC 1971. Does anyone know any more about it. Is it Mdina or an artist who later worked for Mdina? or is it just very similar but not related to Mdina at all?

Thanks for any help.

Stephen

 :)
To me, it looks like an unmarked Mdina weight, on which some owner has scratched their initials and the date.

I'm starting to wonder if this was some sort of "trend" in 1971 ;) - I have a bit of Mdina which also appeared with a strange name and '71, scratched on by somebody who had owned it.

Hi Both,

Completely agree with Sue.  Definitely Mdina and the signature is DIY - I've not found that before but will be looking out for it now.  Will share if I find anymore 1971 examples!!

Thanks Guys.

I thought it was too close to the Mdina ones to not be but the added signature just put that bit of doubt in my mind.

Thanks again

Stephen

I wouldn't worry about it at all. While technically is is "damage", it does not spoil the weight's appearance in any way, and it's not a valuable weight, so I wouldn't bother going to the trouble and expense of having it polished off.
