CMS Krasno / S. Reich Co. pulegoso glass lamp base
« on: March 08, 2015, 01:04:27 PM »
Great pulegoso piece from 1940s Czechoslovakia :D

big (25 cm high, 24 cm wide) lamp base made at CMS Krasno / S. Reich &Co.
Ochre and yellow foamy glass, with applied mottled decor in brown, orange and teal; white handles.
(Like in my other CMS pulegoso vases, constructed of two evenly thick but differently coloured pulegoso layers).

From the Kollektion "Antik", produced in the very early 1940s (and probably designed by Jaroslav Antonín Junek) >> Link to PK with pattern book
On page 12 there is a drawing of a pulegoso lamp base very similar to mine (pattern nr 41/163/1752)

Great piece Michael! These are just as rare and interesting as early Beranek and are all really part of the same story, as you know, it is not necessarily impossible that Beranek made some of these pieces before heading to Skrdlovice. I think they are not easy to find either. CMS and early Beranek do not seem to have had widely different production numbers, of this type of qualty glass. Amazing how infrequently these things appear for sale worldwide, on ebay, auction sites or at fairs. The departments making this stuff at both sites cannot have been sizeable concerns at all, rather specialist... Jindrich was lucky to find one catalogue, it is the only one I have really seen, what a helpful document it is too. A piece a lot like this was at Sypka once I think, but the do not appear often do they?

lovely find,

Thanks! - Nice and unusual, isn't it - a pulegoso lamp. :)

And though the Martinuzzi influence is quite obvious, it is instantly recognizable as Czech...

From my experience, the CMS / Reich pulegoso pieces are even harder to find than early Beranek ones.
I am quite sure, though, that some CMS ones get easily misidentified as Beranek; the stunning vase Alfredo showed >> here on CW, could well be CMS Reich as well. The decor seems similar to that on my lamp.

Robert, do you remember in which Sypka auction you saw a similar piece?

First of all, I absolutely love this piece......

I wanted to comment that I have several pieces of Beranek production with the same label as is on the vase in CW posted by Alfredo.

One of them is Shape 4515 from 1945 - This is a design by Vlasta Lichtàgovà and discussed in Robert's book.

Pic attached. This is not conclusive that his is not Krasno, but I thought it was worth mentioning since we seem to see more marked and labeled examples over here.

The label is a generic export label that I have found on early ZBS too, it is not factory specific, more for export, I find it useful as I have never really seen it on items after 1950. So it, for me, indicates good quality pre 1950 Czech glass. It probably preceded the Bohemia Glass labelling system. The Alfredo vase is most likely CMS. Great Skrdlovice "ram" vases Craig! Beranek likely made these antique style CMS when he was there in the 1930's and took the skills to Skrdlovice and started a legend!

Thanks Robert.... I was only aware of seeing the label on Beranek pieces, so that is good to know.  I have always wondered about that vase of Alfredo's as it has a little different aesthetic than most Beranek I have seen or handled.

Thanks on the ram vases....  I have actually been fortunate in that I found 3, but sold 1. The remaining two are interesting, as they are slightly different colors.....  likely indicative of varying raw materials used at the time..... They are the stars of my Beranek shelf in the living room....

Found another one of these lamp bases! :D
Same design, only the main colour is lighter, and the top is different...
