Strange, chubby ballerina with some sort of reg number
« on: June 19, 2006, 02:57:06 PM »
Here's an odd little figure of a dancer, except it's really not very good. She's an odd shape for a dancer, she's not doing the splits properly and if her head wasn't looking up like that then she'd have a double chin. The registration number is BRN95907 B/75. I guess that's a British registration number from 1975, perhaps?

Can anyone tell me anything about who made her - or point me in the direction of a site where I can research the BRN number?

Thanks very much!

Cathy

Splitting the difference as my lady friend would say.

I've never seen a registration number like that. I see registration numbers mostly on pottery so perhaps glass is different.

BTW, The BRN number on GlassGallery is different to this one.  :?

Hiya Tigger!

The correct number is BRN35907 B/75. I'm thinking, given the quality, it might be something along the lines of Avon. (didn't someone flash like Cambridge have the Avon contract for a while?)

Cheers
Cathy

hi Cathy,

i was just about to begin a new thread, but - learning curve! - used the search option first.
today i found another figure with a similar registration number: BRN3509B/75
it has a bit more art déco look than yours; made of green glass, all satinised (inside base)
~ 11cm tall
hope it´s ok to add it to this thread?
did you get any additional information about the reg. number in the meantime?

Hi Dirk,

No I never found out anything more about her. Interestingly, a figure very like yours was being sold by the same person from whom I bought mine.

Max has mentioned figures which turned out to be some sort of resin. Having not handled mine in a while, I was absolutely certain mine was glass but I'm keeping an open mind.

Cathy et al — The multitude (or should it be plethora?) of patents and registrations on an early '30s Lillicrap's Hone includes:-

  • FRANCE BREVET NO. 708000

  • Could the BRN on your dancer be an abbreviation for Brevet No.?

... and what is a French Brevet No.?   Is it the exact equivalent of a British registration number, or are there differences?

... and I'm always wary of nice tidy numbers like 708000, which are likely to be category, filing, or temporary numbers.

Marcus — Grateful thanks for the website reference.   I've been through it, and it looks to me similar to a British design registration number, but I'm afraid my holiday French is not up to the fine detail, so I hope some kind person happens by who can check this.   In particular, I could not find any reference either to how a Brevet number should be shown on what it protects, or to any archive showing what numbers had been used in the past.

Many thanks Bernard and Marcus. I can't help with the French at all either. Perhaps Dirk can help?

I was rather rude to my poor ballerina. These days, dancers are so skinny that I couldn't imagine one that shape. That said, there's something very odd about her posture and proportions.

    thanks to all!

unfortunately my french is about as good as my suahili, which means it´s all greek to me either...
i´ve tried the search option with numbers - to no avail. also made an attempt with ´BRN´ on
    ebay.fr - same result.

perhaps BRN isn´t a registration number of a country, but e.g. an abbreviation of a brand name? (just
    thinking loudly)
