Faceted Pink Flower ? Waterlily paperweight ID help please
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:04:50 PM »
I thought this may be Caithness or Caithness/ Whitefriars but I can't find it on Scotland's Glass. The faceted areas are all concave. Measures 2 1/4ins high x 3ins wide and weighs 588g. I think it's probably a second as the blue base colour is higher at one side. There are no maker's marks. Any help would appreciated thanks.

It does look very, very Caithnessy indeed, but a bit of a strange one.
If it was a second, (which a wonky lot of base enamels would be in Caithness) why did somebody go to the trouble of facetting and polishing it?

I believe some second-y weights have been found, with inappropriate engraving/sandblasting, because seconds were used for a bit of practice - or simply to make them something non standard, so they could still be sold, but as an unrecognisable/non-catalogued weight, rather than just marking them as seconds.

There is some similarity to "Tranquil Pool" of 1996 (which is not yet complete on ScotlandsGlass) - this would then not be a second used for practising facetting, however, but more likely a design study, which was modified in several aspects for the final design.
