Grog glasses in England according to Old English Glasses 1897.... http://www.archive.org/stream/oldenglishglasse00hart#page/328/mode/2up

The meaning of Grog today seems different...

Quote
The word originally referred to a drink made with water or "small beer" (a weak beer), lemon or lime juice, and rum, which British Vice Admiral Edward Vernon introduced into the Royal Navy on 21 August 1740. Vernon wore a coat of grogram cloth and was nicknamed Old Grogram or Old Grog. However, Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, which agrees with this story of the word's origin, states that the word "grog" was first used in this sense in 1770, though other sources cite 1749. The citrus juice was added to prevent spoilage, then it was also found to prevent scurvy, two reasons to continue the practice.

Do you think the base has been restored on this one?, to take a big chip out these square based glasses you have to reduce the foot size by a big amount to get it looking square, and Peter have you every seen ones in good condition without any base wear, you must come across a fair few old Squared based glass as it's your area of expertise.

I can not find one without damage or heavy wear or restoration.

Possibly, some of the corners have been flattened, but for a glass with little monetary value it would seem hardly worth it.
