Topic: Hailware Jar Find

Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum. I found a jar whilst out walking my dog by the river earlier. I'm a bit of a mudlark at heart and am always nosing around in the mud at the side of the river. It's a pretty jar with a slight purple tint to it and a diamond effect impression. It has 'HAILWARE' stamped on the bottom. Googling the name lead me to this forum as there's not much information about them anywhere else and I certainly cannot find anything similar to my jar. I understand it was made by Hailwood and Ackroyd after 1927 but does anyone know what it was used for? Is it even a jar or maybe a paraffin lamp base or something? It's about 7cm in diameter and about 8cm in height.

My mother told me that such pots held a candle and came in an assortment of colour. They were strung up between the trees as festive lighting for Queen Wilhelmina's birthday party, August 31st, all though the twenties and early thirties.

You might want to search the GMB for more examples of this company's output. I had a Hailware petrol pump globe until recently.

Yeah I've had a look and apart from a few petrol globes, ashtrays, lampshades and mining lamps, I can't find any other pieces like mine. I've emailed Nigel Benson from 20th century glass who seems to be the man in the know about Hailwood glass.
