Kerry Glass and Isle of Wight
« on: June 30, 2006, 03:00:14 PM »
I have two Kerry Glass clear sticky labelled paperweights in my latest batch, but they have Isle of Wight flame marks to the base.   Are the two companies linked in some way, or is Kerry Glass just a retailer?  Are they in fact made by Isle of Wight, or by Kerry?

The weights are tall oval clear with coloured twisted strands, nice but nothing extra special.
I can take some pix if you would like to see.
Thank you very much!

We have two with a Kerry Glass label, as well as a Guaranteed Made In Ireland label, with the flame mark on the bottom.

So if it is Irish, why does it have a flame mark?

And if that is the case, how many Irish weights are there then that have lost their little sticky labels, being advertised as Isle of Wight?

How very odd.....

I know someone will come along in a moment with chapter and verse on this.

 :)
Thank you very much!

Yes, there was a link between Isle of Wight Glass and Kerry Glass. Oher folk have commented on the flame logo on pieces with a Kerry Glass label.

In an earlier message, resulting from info from other contributors, and also a message board for Isle Of Wight glass enthusiasts, I commented:
Quote
So, Kerry Glass was connected to Isle Of Wight (IOW) glass in the early 80s and used the same logo (and similar labelling). And IOW also had another connected outlet via Isle Of Man glass - that's something new to me, too. And it seems that the current IOW people don't know that Kerry Glass closed "2 years ago" (whenever that was).

The message was posted in Sept 2005:

Another message mentioning Kerry and Isle Of Wight items (mostly in page 2 of the message) was:

Kev you are brilliant.  Now why didn't I think of actually searching first.

So thank you very much for being my detective!

Very interesting.

I'm off to read the old threads now
Thank you very much!

Hi
Kerry Glass was set up with the help of Michael Harris & Isle of Wight Studio Glass at the end of the 70's. Timothy Harris helped train the early glassmakers and most of the equipment was made at the IOW studio and shipped out to Ireland. The first collections made at Kerry were designed by M Harris - 'Heather', 'Peat' & 'Shamrock'. They all had the flame logo on the label with 'Kerry Glass' written on and also had the flame prunt on the bottom of the pieces of glass. Unfortunately Kerry Glass lost the original press that emboss's the flame onto the bottom and had one made themselves, this turned out to of been made as a mirror image to the prunt's on IOW glass piece's. So if a piece of Kerry Glass has an identical prunt as IOW glass then it would of been made at IOW glass and is probably one of the early samples sent out to Kerry, but if the prunt is a mirror image then it was made at Kerry.
Hope you find this useful.

David

:D  :D

Thank you so Much, David. This sorts out stuff I've wondered about for ages - the mirror image logo is not something I've seen, but I do have a couple of "Peat" pieces, which I was told should have mirror image prunts, but they are actually the IoWSG way round.

Is there any resolution of the matter of strapped Aurene and Seawood patterns?

Hi Sue

Yes I think so. I stand corrected (mis-informed) the Seaward/Seawood (?) (I will try and get some images on the IOWSG site of the Seaward Collection) is a range before Aurene and the strapping on the Aurene type bottles was apparently a variation of the Aurene, still unsure of the full story of the designs behind the strapping and there certainly was quite a bit made and they appear on a brochure I have dated 1975 but there is not  a collection name. Once things settle down here I will try and get as much info on this as possible and let you know.

David

:D :D :D

Thanks very much, David. I'm familiar and comfortable with the Seaward pieces, I have six. The one I'm not sure about is the turquoise blue as opposed to the royal blue, being used in an Aurene strapped style. Those are the ones (sold, to me!) on the site named Seawood.

Does anyone actually have a 'mirror image' example?
