fritz Scheiner lion bowl - ID = Brockwitz
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:13:52 AM »
I recently purchased a lovely amber glass bowl with lion handles and feet and an acorn pattern. Iwas told it was a bowl designed by Fritz Scheiner in 1936 but I seem unable to find any information regarding the authenticity of this information. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?
thanks Janine

Sounds like it is a Brockwitz piece. A series of deco style master bowls were designed for Brockwitz by Scheiner - and the date you give is the right time frame.

A more frequently found piece is the one with fish handles - it's been discussed here on the GMB a few times. Here's one of the threads for you, that has some extra background info.

The lion handled bowl is seldom seen - and congratulations on getting it. There was a splendid vaseline one on eBay some months back - but my bidding wasn't high enough!

I have to compensate myself with the lovely blue squirrel handled bowl (Brockwitz) I got last year instead  :D

Janine - excuse me for answering again. Yes, the information you've been given is correct. The bowl was made by Brockwitz. The link to the thread I posted above will give you further information.

A series of deco bowls with these unusual figural handles was made in the 1930s - early 40s by Brockwitz. Fritz Scheiner is noted to have been the designer. Lions, squirrels, fish, birds are all portrayed. They are splendid items, and as I noted above, the lion handled bowl is seldom seen and very desirable. Your son has a keen eye and is a lucky young man.

Dear Glen,
Thanks for answering. the link is very useful and we've spotted several other pieces that he has also collected which is wonderful to know as we live in australia and collecting here in the places he can afford is rather difficult.
regards,
janine

Janine, it's fascinating what wonderful pieces of pressed glass from Europe and the USA turn up in Australia (and of course, you also have the fabulous Crown Crystal glass). Some very scarce Sowerby, Inwald (Czech), Brockwitz and even Scandinavian pressed glass was exported to Australia. Plus you also were the recipients of some very rare (and valuable) pastel Carnival Glass.   They're not easy to find - but they're "out there".

That Lion bowl is a beauty. A real treasure. Again, my congratulations.
