Scary piece of glass, any ideas????? ID = René Roubíček
« on: April 03, 2016, 08:22:09 PM »
I found this scary piece of glass at a house clearance and haven't been able to find anything like it in my books or on the internet, can anyone help???

It measures approx. 22cm across, approx. 32cm high and weighs approx. 4kg.
The base is a sphere made from clear glass mottled with red, a large hole to the bottom of the sphere with a ground rim and a smaller hole to the top of the sphere with an unground rim.
Thick strip of clear glass with red, blue, green or yellow, have been randomly applied to the base sphere. The strips also have a crimped edge.
There is a plastic sticker attached to the base with a number written on it and above this what looks like the remains of a circular sticker.
The piece is beautiful in the light and may be some kind of light fitting although the weight of it would probably make this theory unlikely.
Any ideas folks???

Czech is what I suspect from the production number sticker.

Thank you so much for the links, Mark Hill suggested it was by Rene but when I googled him none of the pictures were close to mine so I dismissed the idea. Having seen this though it appears to be very similar 😁
I have never heard of him before, is his work very collectable and how rare would you think this piece is?
Thank you so much for all your help so far

I'm trying to work out a date from my lovely book on the Roubiceks.

(Sklo: Miluse Roubickova, Rene Rubicek, published by The Studio Glass Gallery, London W2
ISBN 0 9536026 0 5)

There is an image of a very similar piece, but just in amber and clear glass, which is the property of Harvey Littleton, and dates to '63;
The very tall clear glass "sticks", which comprise outdoor sculpures, with similar decor, date to '67.

You find a few if you google ´rené roubíček koral´  :)
Funny enough I just bought one last week, too.

Harvey Littleton's piece is illustrated in your link Dirk.  :)
It's the "pointy" Amber and clear one in the second row (on my pc).
It might well be in the Corning Museum of glass, now.

Rene Roubicek was Dale Chihuly's teacher and his... "inspiration".  ;D

Did you really find one of these sculptures (plastiky) for yourself?  :o

I really like the playful approach towards glass-making of both.  ;)

Here´s my Koral. It doesn´t photograph too well on the light-box, but you might get an idea.

Thank you so much!!!!
Funnily enough I had been researching Chihuly's work and had seen some similarities, now I know why 😁
So, as a ball park figure for age, I wouldn't be incorrect by saying 1960's?????
