Hi there,

I bought the plate below thinking that it could have been American elegant glass. And indeed it could have, if it were glass at all... It was sold as glass, but it's completely opaque and it sounds like porcelain when pinged. So, has anyone any ideas what I threw my money at this time? The overlay does seem to be silver.

It does bear that likeness to the elegant depression era glass, so I do wonder whether it might be American.

It sure looks like glass to me :shock: Can we see a picture of the bottom.

I will have to check in my books when I get home on the shape.

Is there such a thing as completely opaque glass? If so, then it could be, but when held to the light, none gets through at all. I thought most black glass was amethyst or dark brown when held to the light.

Hi Cathy -

Yes, there is completely opaque black glass. Take a look at my website. I just added several pieces. Only one shows any indication of a purple red and that is on the footed compote which has a very small glass tag which is thin enough for the light to penetrate. All the other pieces are too dense for the light to penetrate (which is the absolute definition of black) :lol:

I collect black Fenton glass and you can never see any color than black under normal lighting conditons. I suppose if you were to view the glass under a strong enough light source then you might see another color - red, purple, etc.

Paden City is a distinct possibility for your plate. I can look in my Paden City book later today.

Thanks for the explanation of black glass. There's a discussion on the main board at the moment where the opposite is claimed. Thank you for looking in your Paden City book for me! We don't come across a lot of elegant American glass in Australia - although I've got a Gene Florence guide to it somewhere here, but can't lay my hands on it.

Cathy - So far I have not been able to find your plate. It is not in my Paden City book nor HMW Colored Glassware 2, 50 years 1 or 2, or GF Pattern Id Guide 1 or 2.

Thanks, Connie. Well, that explains why it wasn't in my pattern recognition guide. The lines in the pattern are oddly thick, but it does look like applied silver.
