To show, a 2-handled butter dish and cover in purple marbled glass, the underside of the dish bearing the Sowerby peacock trademark and an indistinct registry date lozenge (1X - Y?-W- X /XX). (Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Trevor Cornforth).

The dish and cover is (are?) Sowerby pattern 1414, shown (as a registered design) on page 7 of Sowerby pattern book XI (1885).

Oddly, the dish  (or perhaps a somewhat shallower and elongated version),  without the cover, is shown (also as a registered design) simply as a 'dish', Sowerby pattern number 1413, on page 37 of the same pattern book.

I think there are two reasonable candidates for the registry date lozenge:
10 - Y - W - 9,  10 March 1879 - Parcel 9, Sowerby  RDs 333167-333173
17 - Y - W- 11, 17 March 1879 - Parcel 11, Sowerby RDs 333424-429.

Does anyone have either a 1414 butter dish and cover or a 1413 dish with a clear registry date lozenge to help in determining the correct Sowerby RD number associated with the pattern (or, indeed, patterns, if 1414 and 1413 are from different registered designs), please?

Fred.

This may or may not be of direct help to my initial post, but also on page 27 of Sowerby pattern book XI (1885) is shown a 2-handled dish , pattern 1416, that has a remarkably similar shape to the pattern 1413 and 1414 dishes already shown, except that the dish rim is decorated (rather than plain) and the top surface of each handle is decorated with raised circular beads (rather than being plain).

I attach a photo of a pattern 1416 dish in clear glass. It bears the Sowerby peacock trademark and a clear registry date lozenge for 17 March 1879 - Parcel 11 (one of the candidates for the lozenge on dish 1413 and/or butter dish & cover 1414). (Permission for the re-use of this image on the GMB granted by Mandi Stewart). I strongly suspect that this is actually from RD 333424, described by Cottle as a 'butter dish' and Jenny Thompson as a 'butter'.

I wonder, if Paul S. comes across this topic thread, he might be kind enough to have a quick look through his design registration pics to see if there are likely candidates for design registrations that might match pattern numbers 1413, 1414, or 1416, please?

Well done Holmes  -  these pieces do appear to be based on Sowerby Registration 333424 dated 17.03.1879  -  I have two images - a side on shot and a plan shot, but have to say that the first one is not good - it's that purple pencil again and it hasn't fared well over the years.

Will do best and post later today.

regret the poor quality, but nothing I can really do - perhaps you're clever and can enhance. :)            Anyway, assume you do agree this is a match.

Thank you very much, Paul - an investigation satisfactorily concluded once again.
