Topic: When was this paperweight made ?

  Just purchased this weight and I am unsure of when it was made. I have seen similar weights described as pre 1940 ?

Hi John,

This is a nice Paul Ysart weight. These weights are not always easy to date but my inclination would be to say the post-war Monart period (rather than pre-war Monart). I base my answer on the neatness of the execution, the canes and the colour of the ground.

KevinH will tell us more.

Before I say anything about when the weight might have been made, I would like to see photos of a straight-on side view against a plain white background and an angled view of the whole base.

I have seen a few of this design, but they are certainly less common that standard concentrics.  The one I have at the moment (below) I had assumed was more likely 1950s - 1960s than earlier, but I could well be wrong.

I agree with Sophie and Alan - these examples would seem to be 1950s or 1960/1. As Sophie says, "post-war Paul Ysart, Moncrieff" period.

The canes in John's example could easily have been used in the later PY Caithness or Harland periods and the setting of the pattern is very neat. The base finish, though, is typical of other items I believe are 1950s period. And there does seem to be a slight tint to the clear dome, which would fit for that period.
