Davidson pattern no. 354 chamber stick for show.
« on: January 02, 2017, 10:42:56 AM »
Here are some photos of an unmarked Davidson pattern no. 354 chamber stick in purple marbled glass embossed with their demi-lion trademark. The exterior of the base is embossed with 'shell and coral' decoration (which is also found on the exterior of some of Davidson's other unregistered designs, and the branched finger loop is also decorated as a 'coral' branch. Stands 3¾ inches tall, with a base diameter of 5½ inches. (Permission to re-use the images of the purple marbled chamber stick on the GMB granted by Kevin Collins).

It is shown in Davidson's catalogues of unregistered designs 1880-1890.

I also have some reference photos of another Davidson no. 354 chamber stick in purple marbled glass which does bear their demi-lion trademark.

Fred.

Now for comparison, here are some photos of an unmarked clear glass chamber stick with the same basic shape and the same size as the pattern no. 354 chamber stick shown in the opening post. The finger loop still has the same 'coral branch' decoration (so I presume, perhaps incorrectly, that this is still a Davidson piece).

The exterior of the base is, however, decorated with a 'Greek key and daisy button' design which is strikingly similar to that on Davidson's "Daisy" suite of 1886. In addition the flattened inside top rim of the candle holder cup has concentric rings, whereas that on the no. 354 purple marbled chamber stick is plain.

(Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by bargainman48).

Page 108 of Chris and Val Stewart's 'Davidson Glass - a history' reproduces Davidson's advert for the "Daisy" suite which appeared in the Supplement to the Pottery Gazette in December 1886 but there is no mention of a chamber stick in the pattern.

Does anyone have photos of Davidon pattern no. 354 chamber sticks in other colours, or with other  decorative designs to the exterior of the base, please?

Fred.
