They have one of these in the Neuhaus museum. The tree trunks are glass springs and it's actually a Toy! move a palm tree and the spring oscillates and the monkeys climb down. It's really very good and quite different from the figurine palm tree sets that sometimes turn up.

Thanks.
Finally arrived, so can post better picture of the springs, does someone here collect mechanical glass toys?
I haven't been able to find any references to springs like these yet, will keep hunting.

Apparently clockmaker EJ Dent (Houses of Parliament clock) was experimenting with glass balance springs in 1833!!

Thank you I will try and look it up.
I found a picture of one I took in the museum, along with a spinning wheel. I must admit to being fascinated by mechanical glass ever since I got my first carousel. I'm really tempted to get a lightmill :-)

I share your fascination with functional glass, I used to work in labs and some of the pieces I used were just amazing and had to be specially made by the scientific glassblower, but your mechanical things make me terribly, terrribly nervous. ;D
They're so delicate and fragile!

Thanks guys, I love labware too I think the Ostwald viscometer is my favourite, the most we got to do in the labs was make melting point tubes over the bunsen.
The link to labware is rich and well documented going back a long way in this part of Germany, I think it's why blowing scientific glass from tubes is referred to as "The German Method"

Scientific glassmakers make high precision springs that cost A LOT of money.
