Mdina Michael Harris Fish Vase
« on: April 19, 2017, 08:35:29 PM »
Hi all,

I'm a just wondering if any posters with an interest in Mdina Glass could give their opinions on the value of this vase. I was able to make out the signature on the bottom as Michael Harris, I googled this to discover it is a mdina fish vase. We've had the vase in our family years but I don't know much more about it, any opinions or discussion on this piece would be most welcome!

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome. :)

Not a Fish, but a Cut-Ice Lollipop.
Would it be possible for you to take another pic of the signature, rubbing a little talcum powder over it with your thumb first, to bring it up?
It's not too easy to study it carefully in that image.
We do have lots of information and techie tips to help with resizing, here.

Do you have the very close-up setting on your camera? the portrait one with the flower icon? That would be the setting to use.

We do appreciate the effort you've gone to, to post the images, and to resize, but I'm afraid they don't blow up big enough. :)
It helps to have a plain background too, and crop the images to eliminate excess.
Looking forward to seeing it a little better. :)

To find a rough valuation, you are best to search that well-known auction site for sold items, see what they've sold for in the past.
We don't really get involved with valuations here, they're far too subjective.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with it. It's almost exactly the same shape as mine and it looks like Michael Harris' work.

I need to see the glass itself clearly.  :)
As you know, I'm not interested in signatures.  ;D
They're just scribbles on the bottom, they don't have anything to add to a piece as far as art is concerned. 8)

Ahh there we disagree :) the pieces themselves have less interest for me, its their history that counts :)

Hi thank you so much for the responses and apologies for the late reply. The weekend after posting we had a family wedding, then with a toddler being potty trained and 4 month old, lots of things get forgotten these days!

I'm currently posting and taking photos on my phone, I tried to use an app to resize them, obviously not very successfull!

I'll try to take photos on a better camera and use the laptop.

I ran talc over the signature and it says "Michael Harris Mdina Glass Malta"

It's cut on one side and flat on the other

It's 22cm in height and 22cm across the widest part.

Some folk are willing to pay inflated prices for a signature, so there are now cheats faking signatures on pieces to con them.
Not too many pieces were signed, Michael Harris didn't like doing it and thought the glass should speak for itself. I'm kind of like that too, and I prefer to look at the glass to see if I think it's his work.
But we don't know, without seeing it, whether the signature is real or a fake.

Hi,

This one was probably made by Vicente Boffo and the unsigned example is in a family collection..............
