I picked up this paperweight (10cm tall) at a car boot sale as i was intruiged by the signature, having researched it i have discovered it should be a Siddy Langley but the signature does not appear to be the same as other examples of her work on the internet.

Is it usual for her pieces to be copied? I have only newly discovered her work so have no previous experience and would be very grateful for any opinions.

Many thanks in advance
Bea

Hi Bea,

Best thing to do is ask Siddy Langley: http://www.siddy.com/

But it would be best first to try for larger images and make sure they are properly in focus. Unfortunately your pic of the signing details is too small and out of focus.

I'm looking at a small bit of Marrakesh, the base of the vase is roughly ground, with the remains of a pontil scar showing as a small recess.
It is signed by Siddy around the base, on the surface of the vase, and it is in small, joined up italics, not this deliberate shaping of letters.

The base seems right to me compared to other pieces, it is literally the way signature is written that's different. All the other examples are signed in italics with lower case letters whereas mine is printed in capitals.
I took loads of photos, theses were as focused as I could get, tried larger images but they were too big to post on here, have emailed Siddy.com and still waiting to hear 😁

Plenty of techie info and tips here on how to resize and post pics.

One way to bring up a signature is to rub a little talcum powder over it.
But I'm sure you'll get a reply from Siddy.

Mystery solved! Siddy Langley just emailed this reply

This was made in my Maidenhead Studio which I left to move to Devon in 1997. I used to sign my own work Siddy Langley and the date. When I was pregnant in 1992 I took on someone called Richard Price who would make things to my design. To start with anything he made to my design was signed Alchemy Glass so that people knew I had designed it, it was made in my studio but had not been made by my own (fair!) hand. However, there was a reluctance from the Galleries to stock work which didn’t have the Siddy Langley name on it so I compromised and still signed work physically made by me Siddy Langley but pieces made (to my design) by others was signed Siddy Langley Glass, the makers initials and the date. RP on this piece refers to Richard Price. He joined me in 1992 and stayed on until my Maidenhead studio closed in 1997.
