Want Info on Glass Bowl with Lid. ID = Jeannette Glass Co
« on: May 07, 2017, 02:18:54 PM »
I bought this bowl at the flea market this morning, and I know nothing about it other than I like the way it looks and it was cheap.  From the bottom of the feet to the tip of the lid, it measures about 5 3/4", and the diameter is about 4 1/2".  The color is an orangish-red.  I would be very grateful for any information about this piece, such as the manufacturer, date, value, style, etc..

I think it might be Vallerysthal Portieux.

I agree with Anne, however the original French Portieux 'VIGNE' lidded dish has a smooth surface
VIGNE marked PORTIEUX
That kind of sablé texture and sprayed on red colour of yours points to USA made... Jeannette, PA?

Yes, definitely a Jeannette Glass Co product: their Pattern #3525 in Amberina.
Not sure why they would not have given this an 'official' pattern name, as it appears that the colors in this covered candy appear at least as prolific as those in either their Aztec or Lombardi patterns.

Often seen advertised as "Depression Glass" but am pretty sure it was post-Depression period....more likely mid-century.

Hello Flex1968  -  good to get a positive id.                Assume you mean amberina in the original sense  -  i.e. colour created by re-striking  -  or might the effect be created by spraying as suggested earlier?

Just my opinion regarding Jeannette's "amberina" as I do not know this for a fact, but I doubt the coloration was due to the glass actually containing Au or being run back thru the glory hole for reheating.

Thank you for confirmation of manufacturer, Flex1968!
It is obviously colour sprayed-on - easily to judge if you look at the lid's handle.
I've got this Jeannette bowl - the red colour is badly worn off at the base. You can remove it by scratching with your finger-nails.

thanks for the explanation, and of course to Pamela too for confirmation of 'sprayed on' effect  -  perhaps it should be called something other than Amberina then  -  how about 'faux amberina' ;)

very nice, Paul!  a bit of each French, English, Italian and/or Spanish describes it perfectly, much more convenient than 'fake yellow-to-red', I think  :-*

Thank you all for the identification help.  I see that there is one of these for sale for $8 on ebay now: ebay link.  I guess that I won't be able to retire on the proceeds if I sell mine ;), but I am happy to know what it is, and I paid only $3 for it.
