Unknown bulb or spills vase with swags.
« on: June 26, 2017, 12:40:53 PM »
I bought this to go with my collection of bulb vases which I'll be using later in the year.  I don't know if it was intended to be a bulb vase, but that's what I had fixed in my mind when I spotted it.  It passes the 3 finger rule, but it could be a spills vase ???.  Its not shown in Patricia's book, nor any bulb vase websites.  It appears to have three visible seams.
Any ideas as to maker please before it goes in the garage for later use?
TIA :)

I'm pretty confident it's a vase rather than a bulb vase

I'd agree with Christine, Anne  -  the top simply does not look like that of a bulb vase, where usually there would be a wider part where the bulb would sit.
Is it one inch tall, or 9 inches tall, or  ...................  ;D ;)

I would doubt very much that you will ever find a maker, and not so sure it might be for spills either, sorry

I'm sure you are both correct.  I was so hoping it was a bulb vase, but I will have a go and see what happens.  It didn't cost much, so nothing ventured, nothing gained ;D
Sorry, I forgot to put size ::)  Its just under 6" high.
Many thanks :-*

Try looking straight down the vase from the top.  If the waves appear to be hexagonal it may perhaps be Whitefriars.  If they are a sort of rounded square(see photo) it may be Thomas Webb- but the base finish makes either unlikely.

I use all different vases for bulbs. If yours is a little large for a hyacinth bulb (which do vary in size) you could always try an amaryllis bulb.

The waves do appear to be rounded squares when viewed from the top, but the base is a bit crude IMHO.
I will try an amaryllis bulb.  Haven't thought of using one of those in the past.  My daughter grew three in a large bowl with spectacular results last year.
Many thanks folks  :)

Unfortunately Anne there seems to be very little data about Thomas Webb in general.

Pieces from T.W. frequently have a quality ground/polished depression under the base  -  not always signed I do agree though - and I'd still suggest this piece is not theirs and was never intended for bulbs. :)  .............   but, it you did want a green vase with a frilly top then this would be ideal ;D
