Monart Cloisonne vase real or fake
« on: July 21, 2017, 08:52:42 AM »
Can anyone help with this vase that my Mum is looking to sell. She did not know anything about it except she was told it was rare.I was asked to help and came across a Monart Cloissone piece which looks very similar in shape but not in colour. Then i came across a site that there are lots of fakes and my heart sunk,so not sure now.
It measures 22.8 cms tall by 19.5 cms in diameter. It is predominately blue with reds/pinks and greens in it.
This is in England not where i am in Australia.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, well maybe not if it is a fake.
Cheers Paul.

No, that is not a fake, that is a really lovely bit of Monart Cloisonne.
A very unusual piece.
Just a small word of warning. Monart is known for developing annealling cracks, have a very careful look all over in different lights, check the bottom, try tapping it to see if it rings or thunks.
But even if it does, it is still sellable, just not for so much. I hope it doesn't have any cracks! :)

Hi John & Sue,
thank you for your reply and the good news. The shape does look like a ginger jar shape but bigger.
There are no annealing cracks and it does ring true. All good.
One other info that i would like to know now i am sure it is real is the date of manufacture for these,i do know when Monart were in production.
Also i know we don`t talk about prices but can anyone point me where to look for past prices.
Thanks again,Paul.

A red one sold on that well-known auction site recently, a reasonable ball-park figure for you. I like your colours better.  :)

I'm no good at dates, :-[ but around the 1930s at a guess?
It should be in the information in Scotland's Glass, the site where John found the catalogue image for you.
This is the story of Monart, the link is from the Scotland's Glass site.

Hi Sue,thank you for that.I have looked there( great website) and found that it is a shape C and size V but apart from finding it is an old version shape, nothing about production times.
Thanks again,Paul.

Reporting back with my brother's thoughts. He is a Monart collector and knows a lot more than I do. I'm just familiar with all his stuff. :)

He would like me to make it clear that this is opinion, it's not backed up by documentation, it doesn't exist.

"The cloisonné is very rare and big! We have a smaller one and I don't recall seeing another - the green is not a trick of the photography - I'd say it wasn't the same as the colourway on Scotland's glass. Red is far more 'common' if you could describe cloisonné as being common, that last bit to sell was an unusual shape though. Surface decorated bits all tend to be early (not sure if this is documented anywhere) - they were probably the 'Monart Ware' period but without a label you can't prove it. Monart Ware stopped around 1929 so only lasted a few years. Pieces were only made by the Ysarts - and it wasn't their day job!"

So, educated speculation would date your vase to "pre-1929".
And you can use the word "rare" with confidence.
