Signature Mdina fish vase
« on: July 28, 2017, 04:23:17 PM »
Hello,

I have bought a Mdina fish vase, would like to know more about it. It's a big model of 26 cm tall.

The signature reads: Mdina 1987 (see pictures)

Is the signature real? Any information about the vase is welcome, also what it
might be worth.

Thank you.

Loek

Hello and welcome. :)
It's not a signature on the base, just the factory mark with a date.

The script looks mostly right, but I'm not used to seeing a loopy Mdina one like that, executed with a thin line, from a period as late as '87. They'd moved to using a vibrating tool by then and the mark was a lot thicker.
The date figures look sort of right too, but I'm not sure the marks haven't been added at a later date by somebody else. I can't say for sure thay they were though.
Not that it really matters. :)
You do have an exceptionally good and big Mdina Fish, the date on it is consistent with the design.
We don't discuss values here really, they're far too contentious. Something is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, in that place, at that time. But you can check previous sales in online auctions.

Am I right in thinking that is a continental 7 with the stroke through the centre?
Would that be right for a Mdina vase?
The few that I have with a date that includes a 7 are all the usual type.

I agree with Sue......... Did you buy the vase to display and enjoy or did you buy it because of the 'Mdina 1987' script ?
Sometimes dates are important and do get added after the piece leaves the glass house to increase the 'desirability' but in this case the 1987 does not make it a rare vase.

Cheers,

Patrick.

I thought the mark looked a bit hesitant and might be an attempt at copying a mark. The very fine line is something more often seen on earlier pieces.
The 8 is a bit stiff, it has a corner. I'm just not sure it looks right.
It doesn't help that I have to turn my head sideways. ;D
But I'm not any sort of hand writing expert.
I get more from looking at the glass rather than worrying about handwriting and the shennanigans of folk adding things to the bottom, which isn't seen, at later dates. :)

its very unusual, in fact, I have never seen one dated this late?, It is not usual 'Molina' type of sig for this date.
Something you like, mail me! :)

Hello again,

First off thank you for the warm welcome and all the advice and suggestions.

The pictures are not the best, you can only upload 125kb per picture so that affects the quality, i have added two more from the vase from both sides. They are a bit small but this is the only version that i can upload.

I understand it's not a signature now but a factory stamp or somebody doing it themself most likely, i bought it for display in germany but it might end up in my online shop eventually. I was checking if wat i paid was reasonable, but from looking on the internet i see it's quite a good deal.  :)

Am I right in thinking that is a continental 7 with the stroke through the centre?
Would that be right for a Mdina vase?

Can you clarify the continental 7 remark? This is just a different version of a fish vase?

I don't see a problem with the signature, maybe it is a bit rushed. I wonder if they carried on making fish vases after this date?

It would be nice to have a reply to Loek's question about the continental 7... has anybody got any Mdina glass with this style of 7 etched on it?
