Carnival Glass Bowl
« on: July 30, 2006, 09:03:15 AM »
Hi!
I bought this bowl a few years ago and I do not know much about it!
From what I have read I am guessing it is c1950s and possibly European marigold bon bon bowl/dish. My parents have some dark coloured carnival glass with a smooth/matt appearance. This is smooth around the inside (not matt) but cut around the outside with a snowflake like design. There are a few bubbles in the glass around the edge and the foot of the bowl is chipped. It measures 17cm and 12cm high. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure what you've read - but this piece is in fact an example of original Classic USA Carnival Glass. It's by Imperial and the pattern is Scroll Embossed (interior) and Eastern Star (exterior).

The exterior design is sometimes (wrongly) called Curved Star.

It's a footed comport and has a super iridescence. Nice item  :D

Thank you! That is very interesting and I'm ashamed at how wrong I was on every count! Can I ask how old you think it might be?

Also I paid approx £15 ($27) for the bowl. Does this sound about right? Not that it matters now I guess!

Hi again. Age?  Somewhere around 1911-1920 ish (possibly into the 1920s).

That was a reasonable price for the piece. It's an under-rated item, imho. If it was purple and with knock-your-socks-off iridescence, then you'd be looking at a whole lot more money. The marigold items are more easily found and more affordable.

Just look at the mould work on the exterior. Isn't it fabulous? There's also all kinds of fascinating links...........

For example, the interior design is Scroll Embossed, and made in America, as I noted. But Sowerby in England copied the design. Totally ripped it off! Not unusual, but fascinating (imho).

The exterior is known as Eastern Star, but as I said, some people call the outside design Curved Star. Now that's plain wrong, but it leads us down another path. The intricate geometric design on your piece has similarities with the Brockwitz (German) Curved Star design (called Zurich by Brockwitz). Was there some copying going on? Or was it just coincidence that there are slight similarities?

Lots and lots more to say about all that, but I have gone off at a complete tangent. I did that on purpose 'cos I really wanted to show you what a fascinating piece it is. It may not be a top dollar item, but its place in the history of glass is priceless.

It's also very pretty

That is so interesting. Thankyou very much! My parents pieces are purple I believe and have that petrol sheen to them.
Thanks again!
